Declaration of Independence

Updated: Oct 12, 2018

Final project due Monday, October 15.

Monday, October 8

Students translate the Declaration of Independence into more modern language.

Tuesday, October 9

Students look at the translated Declaration and find the top 4 pieces of evidence. In pairs, they decide what liberty meant to the founding fathers and write a paragraph answering the Inquiry Question: What did liberty mean to Thomas Jefferson and the other signers of the Declaration of Independence? See slide 14 of this presentation for paragraph outline.

Wednesday, October 10

Students will take a PSAT in the morning. In the afternoon, students will answer the question in a paragraph: What does liberty mean to you, as an American? Students should think about:

  • What rights should you have?

  • What should you be able to do?

  • What shouldn't you be able to do?

  • What should be the role of the government? What should it do/not do?

Thursday, October 11

Students will write a paragraph on the question: What does the Declaration of Independence mean to us now? They will think about key parts of the Declaration and consider the meaning of the document. Does the meaning change after 200+ years of history?

Friday, October 12

Final essays due on Monday. They must submit:

  • Drafts of all work (What did liberty mean to Thomas Jefferson and the signers of the Declaration of Independence? What does liberty mean to you? Is the Declaration still important?)

  • Final draft: Put all essays into ONE decorated document. (Please note, first period is only doing the first two paragraphs).

See assignment details and rubric here.
